Short Film Adaptation Script Example

The following is an example of Adaptation script which I did for the adaptation scriptwriting class. It is based on a story in English called There will come soft rains.

IT'S 7:00 AM IN A LG PLACE

(ANIMATION)

1.- INTERIOR / HOUSE / DAY /

An electronic alarm clock marks 7:00 a.m.

THE VOICE OF THE ALARM CLOCK THAT IS HEARD THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE SAYS: today is the first of November 2026, seven in the morning time to get up, seven in the morning time to get up.

The watering can starts spraying water and no one can be seen.

THE WAKE-UP: seven thirty, time for breakfast, seven and a half hour for breakfast.

IN THE BACKGROUND THE TAPPING OF THE WATER WITH THE FLOOR.

The kitchen begins to prepare breakfast by itself as it is automated. The table comes out. The loaves are thrown out of the toaster. The eggs are fried and a cockroach is seen walking across the stove.

THE WAKE-UP CLOCK IN CLOSE-UP: Today is grandfather's birthday and he is coming to dinner, you have to pay for water and electricity.

IN THE BACKGROUND THE COMMON NOISES OF A KITCHEN. THE FRYING OF EGGS. THE JUMPING OF THE BREADS IN THE TOASTER. THE ENGINE OF THE TABLE.

2.- OUTSIDE / HOUSE / DAY

In the garden the irrigation system is turned on, the house is seen in general plan, in it the negatives of a woman who was cutting plants and three children who were playing (they were killed by a bomb nuclear.

IN CLOSE-UP THE WATER GETTING OUT OF THE HOSES AND AS IT FALLS ON THE PLANTS.

IN THE SECOND PLANE AND WITH A FRIGHTENING ECHO THE ECHO OF THE SCREAMS OF THE CHILDREN WHO PLAYED THE PREVIOUS DAY IN THE GARDEN.

INTERIOR / HOUSE / DAY /

A wall clock reads 2:30 p.m.

IN THE FOREGROUND THE VOICE OF THE ALARM CLOCK: 2:30 lunchtime, 2:30 lunchtime.

IN THE BACKGROUND THE WALKING OR TIC TAC OF THE CLOCK.

The table is served, steam comes out of the pans because they are so hot.

THE LOUD WHISTLE OF THE AIR HITTING ON THE EMPTY HOUSE.

The electric alarm clock marks 6:30 p.m.

THE CRASH OF LIGHTNING.

THE ALARM CLOCK: children's bath time, children's bath time

THE RAIN UNLEASHES AND HITS THE ROOF AND MAKES AN ECHO WITH THE UNINHABITED HOUSE.

The tub is almost full of water and continues to fill.

THE WAKE-UP: The table is set, dinner time, dinner time.

IN THE BACKGROUND THE WATER FALLING INTO THE TUB THAT IS CONFUSED WITH THE RAIN.

3 INDOOR / HOUSE / NIGHT

The dinner is ready. The table is set. The wine is ready. The full glasses. The steaming stew. It looks like lightning strikes through the window.

THE RAIN CONTINUES, THE AIR HITS, A LIGHTNING MAKES AN IMPRESSIVE CRUSH.

Inside the kitchen a fire starts, all the appliances start to run wild, the fire extinguishers that are placed on the ceiling are activated and a lot of water falls.

IN A COLLAGE OF SOUND THE ALARM CLOCK SHOUTS: fire, fire, danger fire.

THE WATER FALLS, THE RAIN BOUNDS ON THE ROOF, THE TELEVISION TURNS ON AND PURE NOISE IS HEARD, THE WIND IS BLOWING VERY HIGH.

OUTSIDE / HOUSE / DAY

In a general shot you can see the house destroyed, a lot of smoke comes out, it is a sunny day and everything is calm. Only the wall where the printed negatives are left standing. In a particular shot, you can see the cockroach emerging from the rubble.

THE WAKE-UP: it's 7:00 am on November 2, 2026.
