Example of a Diet Accent
Orthography / / July 04, 2021
The dietic accent is the accent placed on vowel unions that produce hiatus; the hiatus is a sequence of two vowels that are pronounced in different syllables. For example, the words have hiatus alcohol (al - cor - hol), baldio(bal - dí - or), coffeeheyna (ca - fand - í - na), coesufficient (cor - and - fi - hundred - te). This accent is also known as spelling hiatus O well, accentuated hiatus .
We can thus define:
The dieritic accent is the hiatus accent.
Rules of accentuation of words with a dietic accent
Not all words that have a hiatus have a spelling accent. Words with a hiatus follow the same spelling rules for accents as other words in Spanish and there is also an exception. These rules are explained below:
RULE 1: They carry Dieetic tilde the words with hiatus that comply with the rules of accentuation of the words acute, bass, esdrújulas and sobreesdrújulas. For example:
- Pharaoh (pha - ra - on). It has an accent because it is a sharp word ending in
- Fairy (faith - é - ri - co). It has an accent because it is an esdrújula word.
- Gaelic (ga - é - li - co). It has an accent because it is an esdrújula word.
- Boer (bo - er). It has an accent because it is a serious word that ends in a consonant that is not n neither
RULE 2: They carry Dieetic tilde words with a hiatus formed by a stressed closed vowel (i, u) and an unstressed open vowel (a, e, o), regardless of whether or not they comply with the rules of accentuation of the words acute, bass, esdrújulas or sobreesdrújulas. The tilde is placed on the closed vowel.
- Joy (joy). It has an accent because it is a hiatus formed by a closed stressed vowel (í) and an unstressed open vowel (a).
- Owl (owl). It has an accent because it is a hiatus formed by a stressed closed vowel (ú) and an unstressed open vowel (o).
- Darius (da - laugh - o). It has an accent because it is a hiatus formed by a closed stressed vowel (í) and an unstressed open vowel (o).
- Duo (duet). It has an accent because it is a hiatus formed by a stressed closed vowel (ú) and an unstressed open vowel (o).
RULE 3. They carry Dieetic tilde words with a hiatus formed by a unstressed open vowel (a, e, o) and a stressed closed vowel (i, u), regardless of whether or not they comply with the rules for accentuation of the words acute, bass, esdrújulas or sobreesdrújulas. The tilde is placed on the closed vowel.
- Coffin (a - ta - úd). It has an accent because it is a hiatus formed by an unstressed open vowel (a) and a stressed closed vowel (ú).
- Trunk (ba - úl). It has an accent because it is a hiatus formed by an unstressed open vowel (a) and a stressed closed vowel (ú).
- Drop (drop). It has an accent because it is a hiatus formed by an unstressed open vowel (a) and a stressed closed vowel (í).
It should be clarified that the existence of the letter h separating the vowels does not prevent the existence of the hiatus; it does not affect its sequence, since the hache is a silent letter in Spanish.
