    Characteristics of Non-Metals

    Chemistry   /   by admin   /   July 04, 2021

Nonmetals are chemical elements that are defined as being diametrically opposed to metals, these elements lose the qualities that characterize metals.

    The non-metals are:

    1. Argon
    2. Astatus
    3. Sulfur
    4. Bromine
    5. Carbon
    6. Chlorine
    7. Krypton
    8. Fluorine
    9. Match
    10. Helium
    11. Hydrogen
    12. Neon
    13. Nitrogen
    14. Oxygen
    15. Radon
    16. Selenium
    17. Xenon
    18. Iodine

Nonmetals can be anything from gases to chlorides.

    8 Characteristics of non-metals:

    • Acidity. They are characterized by their acidity, since the vast majority of non-metal oxides form some acidic solutions.
    • Brilliance. By their nature, non-metals have low brilliance unlike metals.
    • Hot. Heat transmission is lower in non-metals.
    • Conductivity. Nonmetals are not good conductors Nonmetals are distinguished primarily by not being good conductors, although this does not mean that they cannot conduct.
    • Ductility. Non-metals do not have the ability to bend or stretch, so sheets cannot be made by plastic deformation.
    • Gases. These elements are mostly gases.
    • Chemical properties. Among the chemical properties of nonmetals is that in their last layer they have from 4 to 7 electrons and when ionized they can acquire a negative charge and with oxygen they form non-metallic or anhydride oxidations.

    • Semi-conduction. These elements, due to their reduced or null conduction, are used as insulators or as semiconductors within appliances and devices.
