Example of Tenths, Hundredths and Thousandths

Between the fractional and decimal numbers, which are quantities less than one (the integer, 1), are those based on the submultiples of the number 10. The first three orders in this set of numbers are the tenths, the hundredths, and the thousandths.

These three are characterized by the fact that:

• The denominator of the fraction is 10 in the tenths, 100 in the hundredths, and 1000 in the thousandths.
• In decimal numbers there will be, next to the decimal point (or the comma, as used in Europe), as many places as zeros (0) have the multiple of 10. In the tenths, there is 1 place (0.N). In hundredths, there are two places (0.NN). In the thousandths, there are three places (0.NNN).

Tenths, hundredths and thousandths in fractions

In fractions, the denominator is the number below it and indicates how many parts the whole is divided into. For these cases:

• The tenths are the parts of a whole divided into 10 (denominator 10).
• The hundredths are the parts of a whole divided into 100 (denominator 100).
• The thousandths are the parts of a whole divided into 1000 (denominator 1000).

For example:

• Six tenths = 6/10
• Ten hundredths = 10/100
• Four hundred and fifty thousandths = 450/1000

Tenths, hundredths and thousandths in decimal numbers

Decimal numbers are related to fractions divided by 10, 100, 1000, etc. The places to be covered after the decimal point will be as many as zeros (0) be in the multiple of 10.

• Tenths are equivalent to fractions divided by 10, and have a place next to the decimal point.
• Hundredths equals fractions divided by 100, and they have two places next to the decimal point.
• Thousands are equal to fractions divided by 1000, and have three places next to the decimal point.

For example:

• Six tenths = 6/10 =6
• Ten hundredths = 10/100 = 10
• Four hundred and fifty thousandths = 450/1000 = 450
