Situated between linguistics and literary criticism, stylistics is a scientific discipline that studies the expressive procedures of speech. It is defined as "science and theory of styles".
Its initial normative and prescriptive character - which it maintained until the 19th century. while it remained related to syntax and rhetoric — it has become predominantly analytic, under the influence of modern linguistics and semantics. He is currently investigating all the expressive modalities of language.
Stylistics has two branches: one studies ordinary speech in its effectiveness and expressiveness. (linguistic stylistics) and the other is dedicated to literary speech, as an auxiliary to criticism (stylistic literary).
In all cases, the object of this science is the way the language is dressed to represent, in a defined way, a certain content. It introduces interpretation in related disciplines such as phonetics, lexicography, morphology, semantics, and syntax.
