Example of Homogeneous Mixtures
Chemistry / / July 04, 2021
A mixture is the combination of two or more substances, in which each one of them retains its individual physical or chemical properties, that is, they do not react with each other. Individual characteristics can alter the characteristics of the whole, however, they are still a mixed bag. A homogeneous mixture is a kind of mix in which we cannot perceive the ingredients (also called phases) individually, but we perceive it as a set with the same characteristics in any part of the mix.
There are several types of homogeneous mixtures. There are mixtures of solids in which it is not possible to distinguish the components, such as a mixture of salt and sugar.
The solutions are also homogeneous mixtures, since the liquid phase (water in most cases) contains some dissolved substance (bicarbonate, salt or sugar). which retain their properties, there is no visible division between them, and wherever a sample is taken from the mixture, it has the same properties and quantities.
Other homogeneous mixtures are those of liquids, in which two liquid components (water and alcohol, for example) mix without reacting, and there is no division that can be seen.
A homogeneous mixture is emulsions, such as mayonnaise.
The same happens with gases. The air we breathe is a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and other gases.
One of the types of homogeneous mixtures that we see more frequently, are metallic alloys. Combinations such as bronze (copper and tin, and sometimes nickel), steel and cast iron (iron and carbon in both cases) are examples of homogeneous mixtures. in which its components have not reacted, but individually retain their characteristics, which are homogeneously combined in each material.
Examples of solid homogeneous mixtures:
- Icing sugar and flour
- Baking soda and salt
- Sugar, salt, and baking powder
Examples of homogeneous mixtures in solution:
- Sugar water solution.
- Milk
- Chocolate milk
Examples of homogeneous metal alloy mixtures:
- Cupronickel
- Bronze
- Sterling silver
- White gold.
