The main representatives of the generation of 98In Spain they were known as the generation of 98, to some Spanish intellectuals who met in a particular way and their meeting became general; their meetings began with the social and moral produced by those in the Spanish-North American war, in which lost control of the island of Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Cuba and Guam, an event that occurred in the year of 1898.
In its beginnings it began with the meeting of the group known as the "Group of Three", Borja, Azorín and Maerzu)
When the generation of 98 takes shape, the change that took place in Spanish literature is already evident, since in the sphere of language is reached during the last third of the nineteenth century which produces without exaggeration a new style.
The prose, so rhetorical and sonorous, worked with all kinds of syntactic links, is replaced by other prose more agile, natural and divided into small paragraphs.
The long period is transformed into short and cut. A new genre is born, or better yet, develops to unsurpassed perfection: the essay.
His works were published in various magazines, such as:

- "Helios"
- "Spanish Soul" and
- "The ferns".
Four were the novelists of the generation of '98:
- Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936);
- Ramón del Valle Inclán (1869-1936);
- Pío Baroja (1872-1956);
- José Martínez Ruiz "Azórín" (1874-1967).
