The United Nations (UN)

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after World War II by 51 countries that pledged to maintain peace and international security, develop friendly relations between nations and promote social progress, better standards of living and rights humans. Due to its unique international character, and the powers of its founding Charter, the Organization can make a decision on a wide range of issues, and provide a forum for its 192 member states to express their views, through the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and other organs and commissions.

The work of the United Nations reaches all corners of the world. Although best known for peacekeeping, peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and humanitarian assistance, there are many other ways of the United Nations and its system (specialized agencies, funds and programs), affecting our lives and making the world a place best. The Organization works on a wide range of fundamental issues, from sustainable development, environment and refugee protection, disaster relief, fighting against terrorism, disarmament and non-proliferation, to the promotion of democracy, human rights, governance, economic and social development and international health, clearing land mines, expanding food production, and more, in order to achieve their goals and coordinate efforts for a safer world for this and future generations.
