When a group of people shouts intensely, there is a clamor. On the other hand, clamor has a second meaning, since it also means a cry or exclamation of pain.
This word comes from Latin, specifically from clamor, clamoris, which means shouting or acclamation.
The popular clamor
In ancient Rome, the people used to greet leaders effusively and when this happened, there was talk of the conclamatio, that is, a collective cry and used in a positive sense to honor yet Leader political or military. The conclamatio was also used in those situations in which the army lost the military leader and the group of soldiers proclaimed another leader by acclamation. On the other hand, the concept of clamor had a negative meaning, since the people expressed their discomfort in the form of collective shouting, also known as popular clamor.
The popular clamor of the Romans as a protest mechanism continues in our culture. Thus, in some demonstrations or acts of protest, hundreds or thousands of people express their opposition to something and to
describe This phenomenon is referred to as the popular clamor. The idea of clamor usually has a claim component. In this sense, if a group of people protests against an unjust situation, it can be described as a cry for the Justice.
Cry as a manifestation of pain
In our language there are many ways of referring to pain. We can use terms like crying, pain, suffering, anguish, regret, damage, grief or outcry, among others. It could be said that the cry is a way of understanding pain. In general, it is a psychic lament and not a physical pain.
In biblical language
In the Bible we can find many references to the cry as a spiritual lament. There are various passages in which men find themselves desolate and victims of some kind of suffering. When this happens, anguish is expressed in the form of a cry with the hope to be heard by God. Thus, the word clamor is used in those contexts in which there is a deep helplessness and appeal is made to intervention divine.
The clamorous adjective
When something happens with character exceptionally, this tends to provoke an intense reaction on the part of a group, that is, there is a clamor spontaneous. On the other hand, certain conspicuous mistakes are classified as glaring failures. In short, clamorous as an adjective is used to indicate that a situation is extraordinary ("the decision of the jury caused a clamorous silence in the public ").
