Among Mexicans, the acronym CURP is known as the Unique Key of the Registry from Population. As its name suggests, this password is used so that citizens can access all kinds of information related to the Public administration.
The CURP should be understood as a useful instrument both for citizens and for the Administration. With it, residents who live in Mexico and Mexicans who live abroad register in a registry through a document of personal identification (for example, the birth certificate) and then they receive a document proving the assignment of the key to each citizen (This document is divided into front and back and in each part the different personal data appear, including the CURP code and a code of bars).
A key with 18 references combined in letters and numbers
From a technical point of view, the CURP is made up of 18 numbers and letters that are divided as follows:
1) the first four elements are letters, which are the initial and the first vowel of the first surname and the initial of the second surname and the initial of the first name,
2) the next six numbers refer to the date of birth (for example, 120678),
3) next comes a letter to indicate sex (M for male and F for female),
4) two letters express the code of the federal entity of birth (for example, DF),
5) the next three letters are the first three internal consonants of surnames and names,
6) Finally two verification numbers come.
In summary, this alphanumeric code is made up of 16 elements that are extracted from some probative document of the citizen plus two elements that are assigned by the National Population Registry, also known by its acronym RENAPO.
Other questions of interest about the CURP
- All citizens can consult this password through Internet.
- It is convenient to check that there are no erroneous data in the document that accredits the CURP and if there are any, it is possible to request their correction.
- The document that accredits the CURP has been in force in Mexico since 1996 and allows more agile procedures to be carried out in all types of procedures (to obtain the vaccination card, a certificate of studies, a job application, to open a checking account in a Bank, company registration, passport application, etc.).
- The CURP is assigned to all Mexican citizens, regardless of their residence.
- To the margin From this identification, the Mexican population also uses others, such as the INE, the RFC or the IFE.
