Etymologically herbicide means what kills plants or herbs, since the suffix cida means to kill (like the word homicidal or suicidal). Therefore, the etymology of the term already tells us what we are talking about, a product (usually chemical) designed to prevent the growth of so-called weeds in those areas where it is intended cultivate.
Herbicides are used in various contexts: in relation to fields of culture, with private orchards or with gardens and public spaces.
Types of herbicide and how they work
Not all herbicides are the same, as some kill all herbs while others are selective and kill a specific species of grass.
Another way to classify them is by making a distinction between herbicides that are applied to the ground or those that are applied to the leaves of plants. Those of the first type are used in fruit crops or olive groves and are introduced into the ground so that the chemical substance does not allow weeds to germinate. The herbicide applied to the leaves does not affect the root of the plant and is generally used in gardening.
Herbicide specialists attach great importance to how these substances work (experts use the acronym MdA, mode of action). In order to decide The MoA requires an interdisciplinary study between physiologists, chemists and other disciplines. It should not be forgotten that the impact of a herbicide on a crop is decisive for the production of the same and, therefore, using one herbicide or another has direct effects on the economy of the farmer, the development of a region or the health of a population.
The controversy over its use
In recent years the use of herbicides has received all kinds of criticism. In the United States, it has been proven that traditional extensive crops (for example, corn and soybeans) have deteriorated in recent decades. On the other hand, there are numerous studies that link herbicides with certain diseases (one of The herbicide that receives the most criticism is glyphosate, whose active ingredient negatively affects the environment, animals and people).

The ecological alternative
The drawbacks associated with conventional chemical herbicides have generated the search for alternative solutions. Ecological herbicides are intended to be effective in their function, non-polluting and at the same time a useful instrument that allows the cost effectiveness Of crops. The natural strategies to eliminate weeds are diverse: use a mechanical device to kill them (for example, a mower) or use natural plant protection products that are not pollutants.
