Currently understood as one of the main forms of art However, for a long time, ceramics were understood from a functional point of view, since each and every one of the products made under this technique they were made for a specific purpose or utility.
Ceramics is one of the oldest human activities, perhaps the forerunner of many other forms of art. Pottery in Greek means'substance burned 'or' heated substance ', for which we could describe this activity as the one in charge of cook certain types of materials in order to solidify them and give them consistency permanent. The earliest forms of pottery have been found in the last period of the Stone Age of Prehistory, a period known as Neolithic in which man had to begin to build his own elements of storage for the agricultural and food products it produced.
Pottery was however, from a beginning, a support on which the human being could make different types of inscriptions or designs, in addition to turning each ceramic element into a unique element in itself due to its
design, color and style. The oldest ceramic vessels and containers already show us colorful designs, shapes and inscriptions made on the material that were probably made to collaborate with the ID thereof.Today, and thousands of years later, ceramics is more than anything an artistic activity that has evolved greatly. In this sense, the human being has been able to develop ceramics with other materials that were not clay or clay, in addition to inventing new and incredible techniques of patina, decoration and coloring above the material. At the same time, the shapes of ceramics have varied greatly and while the former used to be crude and simple, today you can find wonderful works of art of high refinement and delicacy. Among the different techniques of production ceramics we must mention those known as terracotta, porcelain, majolica (typical of the island of Mallorca), earthenware and many others.
