Poverty is a social and economic situation characterized by a marked lack of satisfaction of basic needs. The circumstances to specify the quality of life and determine whether a particular group is classified as impoverished are usually access to resources as the education, housing, drinking water, medical assistance, etc.; likewise, they are usually considered important to carry out this classification work circumstances and level of income.
The variety of elements mentioned makes the task of measuring poverty governed by various parameters. Specifically, there are two criteria: the so-called “absolute poverty” that emphasizes the difficulties in achieving minimum levels of quality of life (nutrition, health, etc.); and the so-called “relative poverty”, which emphasizes the absence of income for the satisfaction of basic needs, either in part or in full.
The areas that are registered as most committed to this phenomenon are undoubtedly those of the Third World
, highlighting markedly those of Africa, where the percentage of population below the poverty line it can exceed seventy percent in some countries. They are followed by Latin American countries, with Honduras being the nation where the numbers of the poor are larger in relation to the total population.Despite this predominance of the poor in underdeveloped nations, those first world states also had to do faced with this problem, mainly due to the immigration waves of people seeking improvements in their standards of lifetime. Thus it was evident that remaining undaunted by the economic and social problems of the third world could not only be understood as an objectionable position from an ethical point of view, but as a politics counterproductive.
At present, the people most affected by the scourge of poverty correspond to the female sex, with this group registering the highest number of deaths from hunger.
