Considered one of the environmental phenomena that most affect human development and all possible forms of life, drought can be described as the absence of irrigation or water on the land or surface for a long period of weather.
Absence of water on a surface for a long period of time. Causes
Drought is usually caused by the lack of rainfall in a region, and while in some cases it may have to do with the common cycle of events (i.e. in areas that are prone to drought), in others it may happen in unexpected.
We can also say that in some cases drought is a constant condition of an area, such is the case of deserts.
This climatic condition, especially when it is a characteristic of the area or region, generates that the settlement of population be it very scarce or directly null, because of course, it is not a suitable terrain for the development of life. Without water we know that it is impossible for living beings to survive and to develop per se and their jobs.
In these places the soil erodes and the productionagricultural it is unfeasible.
In desert areas the rains hardly exceed 200 mm per year, while the drought will be determined when during two years in a row the rains are less than 60%, and prevent, for example, the satisfaction of the needs.
These regions are found in close proximity to the tropics.
Drought can occur for several reasons, all of them related to the absence of water.
In this sense, some cases of drought can occur due to the continuous lack of rainfall that serves as natural irrigation for the land. In other cases it may be due to the drastic decline of different sized water basins (for Generally, basins of stagnant water such as lakes or ponds, although also streams or small rivers can dry up).
Serious consequences
When drought affects an area agricultural and hyper-active livestock will certainly constitute a serious problem for economic development to continue as there is no water enough, the crops will not be able to develop as expected and in the case of the animals they will end up dehydrating due to the impossibility of drinking water.
This fatal scenario is capable of causing million-dollar losses of money to the affected areas.
On the other hand, as water sources are also affected, it is possible that the supply of drinking water is affected and then it should implement a water rationing plan in order to guarantee the supply and avoid the total lack of this precious resource as water.
The influence of climate change
In either case, drought appears in scene as the consequence of climate change that causes the increase in temperatures and the arbitrary redistribution of natural phenomena such as rain, achieving that while harsh and extensive droughts occur in the same country, large and uncontrollable floods also occur.
As stated at the beginning, the main problem with drought is that it presents important difficulties for the normal development of life, be it plants, animals or beings human. Drought also causes soils to lose their nutrients and moisture, becoming impractical and unsuitable for agriculture or grazing, thus further limiting the possibilities of survival. Prolonged and uncontrollable droughts can easily turn a previously rich and fertile land into a desert, a phenomenon known as desertification.
Dry mouth
On the other hand, the concept is also used in some Spanish-speaking places, more precisely in the use colloquial of language, to designate the dryness that someone feels in their mouth and that may be due to various causes, because they have not ingest liquids, because he has eaten some very seasoned food and then this has caused the mouth to dry out and demand more liquids than those of custom; also some medication or condition can be the cause of this dryness in the mouth.
