Subject and Predicate Example
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
The subject and the predicate are classifications that are made to designate two different syntactic functions that we can find in a sentence in Spanish. Syntactic functions are those functions that relate to how words are combined or structured within sentences to express or mean something. That is, what role certain words play within a sentence.
Characteristics of the subject:
It is known as subject to the word or set of words that have the syntactic function of carrying out the action, the state or the process that are expressed by the verb within a sentence. The subject is made up of a noun phrase. This type of phrase is one that is formed with one or more words whose nucleus or central element is a Name, a word with which we name something.
The subject always has agreement with the verb in person and number; in other words, grammatically, the subject and the verb have a correspondence in terms of their form. For example, if the subject is plural, the verb in turn will express that in its form: “the children slept”, “the friends went out”, “the pigeons flew”.
There are different types or classifications of subjects; among them we can find the agent subject, the patient subject, the explicit subject, the implicit subject and the indeterminate subject.
Characteristics of the predicate:
It is known as a predicate to the word or set of words that make up the verb phrase of a sentence. This phrase is a grouping of words whose core or central element is a verb and its function is to express something that is carried out or executed by the subject. In addition to the verb, a verb phrase is made up of other words that complement the meaning of said verb, such as interjections, adverbs, participles, prepositions, etc.
The predicate, when designating what the subject does, as mentioned, will always have agreement with this in person and number. That is, if the subject is in the singular, in the plural or refers to any of the people grammatical (I, you, he, she, you, we, you, they) also the verb will reflect this in its way.
Between the types of predicate that exist we can find the following: simple predicate, compound predicate, verbal predicate, nominal predicate, adjectival predicate and adverbial predicate.
