The word cylinder is a term that admits several uses in our language, while we will begin by addressing the most widespread one that occurs at the request of the scope of geometry; here the cylinder is a fquadric figure that has been conformed by the displacement parallel to a straight line (generatrix) and along a flat curve, which can be either closed or open, and is known as a directrix.
It should be noted that the generatrix, as a consequence of the movement that he proposes, gives way to the geometric figure; It can be curved or straight and the shape of the figure will depend on this. If it is straight it will give way to a conical and cylindrical figure, on the other hand, if it is curved it will create spheres and ellipses
When the guideline is a circle and the generatrix is perpendicular to it, we will obtain a right circular cylinder, a question that is also known as revolution, by the rotation of a flat curve around a line.
There are different types of cylinders:
rectangular cylinder (when the axis is perpendicular to the base), oblique cylinder (when on the contrary it is not perpendicular to the base) and cylinder of revolution (when it appears limited by a surface that will rotate 360 °).On the other hand, in machine engines, the cylinder, turns out to be that space in which the piston moves. The cylindrical shape that this space precisely presents is what has given it its name.
In those internal combustion engines, such as those used by motor vehicles, a particular arrangement of cylinders, more valves, pistons, rings and many other mechanisms that will be responsible for carrying out the explosion of fuel, which will be what ultimately allows the movement of the car.
Due to the demanding work it does, the cylinder is normally manufactured from a solid and resistant metal.
On computing, the term cylinder is also used but to designate a series of tracks that are arranged horizontally in a HDD.
And in biology the shaft cylinder is an extension of the neuron that normally branches and will be able to contact other cells.
