As one of the fastest growing areas of medicine in recent times, Psychiatry is one that is interested in the study of the human mind as well as the evaluation, diagnosis and rehabilitation of diseases or disorders related to it. Psychiatry may be interested in the analysis and treatment of both emotional complications and cognitive alterations in the individual.
Psychiatric practices are believed to have existed in Humanity since time immemorial in which different societies and cultures tried to understand and explain various health disorders mental. The term psyche It comes from the Greek and has always been understood as the soul or breath of life of an individual, that which we possess that makes us different from animals. Psychiatric science will then focus on the analysis, diagnosis and mental health treatment according to those parameters previously established as normal.
Psychiatry is the science that studies mental health from a medical point of view and for many, psychiatry professionals are those that must take into account both the social and biological elements of each individual, thus remaining as an intermediate between the
Neurology and the Psychology. The presence of disease or mental alteration is what Psychiatry must deal with through administration of appropriate treatment. According to psychiatric practices, treatment can have medical care as well as therapeutic care, thus resorting to various theories. Normally, Psychiatry is related to the administration of medicines and drugs that must be properly assimilated and controlled in order to prevent the development of dependence before such substances.Psychiatry today presents different branches and specializations. Although Adult Psychiatry is the most common, there is also Psychiatry for kids, adolescents and geriatric (that is, for the elderly).
