The Vademecum it's a text that compiles the information on all the medicines available both in a country and worldwide in a given period of time, it is updated every year. It is aimed at staff of the Health as is the case with doctors, pharmacists and dentists, however, in many countries the general public also has access.
Initially, the vademecums were books with annual editions, currently they are available in digital versions, they are included in the medical records software and can even be downloaded as applications for devices, such as personal computers, tablets or mobile phones in versions adapted to the different types of operating systems.
What information does a Vademecum contain?
The information contained in the formulary is presented following a scheme what includes:
- Beginning active or generic name.
- Trademarks Y laboratory pharmacist of each brand.
- Presentations. form in which the medicine is available, here it is specified if it is tablets, tablets, capsules, syrup, drops,
solution oral, nebulization solution, creams, ointments, patches, spray, inhaler, ampoules for intramuscular use or ampoules for intravenous use. The concentration of each presentation and the number of doses each package contains.- Indications. The different uses for which this drug is approved are established.
- Posology. The indicated dose for each product is specified in the different pathologies, both in the case of adults and in children. kids, as well as what should be the duration of treatment.
- Contraindications. It corresponds to cases or conditions in which it is not advisable to use the drug.
- Interactions. In some versions it is possible to have information related to the different drugs with which a drug can show some type of interactionThis is very valuable since it avoids prescriptions that can produce significant adverse effects or decompensation of associated pathologies.
How is the information presented?
The formulary mainly shows the information grouped in indexes by active principle, however they also show the information based on other parameters such as products according to the pharmaceutical laboratory that elaborates it or products according to their therapeutic effect (analgesics, antihypertensives, hypoglycemic agents, anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, etc.).
Many times they have annexes that indicate the active ingredients or the presentations that are already are not available in the updated edition as well as the interactions between different drugs. They also provide contact information for the various pharmaceutical laboratories.
