The Rohingya community is integrated in Myannar, the former Burma. They constitute a group of slightly more than one million people in a country with more than 60 million inhabitants. Their individual rights are being trampled on because they form a Muslim collective in a predominantly Buddhist country. Those who harass them are members of the Arakan Buddhist ethnic group and the Myannar military.
A violent campaign against them has forced them to leave the country
Those who resist in their localities have to assume all kinds of dangers and even extermination (it is estimated that more than 20,000 Rohingya have been killed).
To justify this persecution the government de Myannar has accused them of terrorist acts. On the other hand, it must not be forgotten that when Burma liberated itself from British rule, the Rohingya participated in the repression of the Burmese people.
A genocide ignored by the mainstream media
In recent years, the Rohingya have been persecuted and have been forced to move outside their own country. Their houses were burned down, many women were raped and thousands of them have been killed. This helpless situation forced them to abandon their villages.
In their native country they have not received support and have been denied citizenship. This means that more than a million people do not have right to receive education or healthcare.
In Bangladesh refugee camps have been organized in which thousands of men and women live in very precarious conditions. The Rohingya people also travel to Indonesia, Malaysia or Thailand and to get there they use small illegal boats that sometimes sink in the sea. As in other latitudes, the boats are in the hands of human traffickers.
The host nations are not exactly being welcoming and intend to expel them from their territory. This situation generates a conflict at the international level, since according to the postulates of the UN, it is not legitimate to return someone to their country when they are being persecuted or threatened.
The tragedy This people is not unknown to the international community and in this sense, those responsible for UNHCR affirm that the Rohingya are victims of genocide. Some analysts claim that the extermination of this town is very similar to the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.
The role of Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi is internationally known for two reasons: she for years she was a prey politics of the government of the military junta of Myannar and in 1991 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
In 2016 his situation changed radically and since then he has directed the Foreign Ministry of his country. She is striking that an advocate for human rights do not play a more active role in relation to the persecution of the Rohingya people.
