Example of Numeral Adjectives

The numeral adjectives are the ones determine a numerical quantity in the name. They are divided into five types: cardinal, ordinal, proportional, partitive, and distributive.

Types of numeral adjectives:

The cardinal numeral adjectives, are used to count and in them the amount is expressed in a complete way:

• Two sheets,
• Three children

The adjective numeral one suffers an apocope when it immediately precedes a noun:

• Book
• A friend

The word one, never suffers apocope.

The word hundred, has three apocopes:

When in front of a noun:

• One hundred soldiers
• One hundred centuries.

When in front of a qualifying adjective:

• One hundred famous singers

When it is in front of a cardinal numeral adjective by which it is multiplied;

• One hundred thousand millennia.

When it is added with the cardinal numeral adjective that follows it, it does not suffer from apocope;

• One hundred twenty.

Cardinal numerals made up of tens and ones are written in three words:

• Sixteen,
• Thirty-five

Except for the numbers that are between twenty and thirty, since these are written with a single word without the (e) of twenty, and instead of the (y) it is put (i) Latin;

• Twenty three,
• Twenty nine

The word both or both is a numeral adjective, and a plural one that serves to indicate at the same time two things or two people.

• My Dad and my Mom went on a trip; both of them they brought me gifts.

The cardinal numeral adjectives They serve to indicate the order or corresponding position of the people or things that make up a series.

• Twentieth year
• Fourth day

The battalions of an army are designated with cardinal numbers like this:

• The five infantry,
• The eleventh cavalry.

The proportional numeral adjectives or multiples. They are those that indicate the number of times that a quantity contains a lesser:

• Duplicate
• Duplo
• Double

When they follow from the article, the multiples are nouns:

• Eight is the quadruple of two.

The partitive numeral adjectives They serve to indicate how many parts a unit is divided into.

• A quarter of my cheese.

Partitives become nouns when they are not accompanied by the word part:

• The room of my wealth

The distributive numeral adjectives. In Spanish it is only the word two, and its feminine, sendas, which means one for each.

• The women came with paths baskets in their hands, (each one had one)

Sometimes the word two is used erroneously, and therefore we must avoid it, as a synonym of big or striking: you came out with both clothes!
