In expository, didactic and dissemination texts, it is common to cite technical or scientific terms that must be explained to the reader who, in general, is not a specialist on the subject. The explanation or meaning of these terms is a definition.

The definitions in the paragraph are generally identified as an explanation of the term, which is placed between punctuation marks that delimit it. The most common is to use parentheses or hyphens. Another form of punctuation to delimit a definition in the paragraph, is to put it between commas.

A variant of definitions in the paragraph is to make a footnote. In this case, it is only considered definition in the paragraph, if the note is necessary to understand the meaning of the paragraph that is being read.
