Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
Concessive conjunctions are those conjunctions that express a sense of concession: inform us of an action that is carried out despite an obstaclewho could oppose. That is, the action of the main verb is carried out despite an opposition introduced by the concessive conjunction.
Concessive conjunctions are classified within the subordinate conjunctions since the elements they introduce (sentences or syntactic groups) are subordinate to the main sentence; that is, they syntactically depend on that sentence.
For example:
- "I'm cold even if I am wearing a sweater ”. The action raised in the first sentence (being cold) is carried out despite the situation raised in the subordinate sentence (I am wearing a sweater). The conjunction even if It tells us that the main action is carried out regardless of the obstacles of the subordinate clause.
In Spanish we only have one concessive conjunction: the conjunctioneven if.
On the other hand, there are also conjunctive phrases concessive: they are phrases that work the same as a concessive conjunction. For example:
even though, even though, even though, even though, even though ...For example:
- “Even if she did not study, she passed the exam ”.
- You can also use a concessive phrase that works in the same way as the conjunction even if: “Although she did not study, she passed the exam ","Although she did not study, she passed the exam ","Yes OK she did not study, she passed the exam ”.
Sentences introduced by a concessive conjunction are called concessive prayers or concessive subordinate clauses. These sentences, as already explained, will inform us of the obstacle that could be opposed to the main action.
