The complements of the adverb are one or more words that serve to complement the state that expresses a adverb, creating an adverbial phrase or group, that is, a group of words that fulfill the function of adverb.
We use adverbs to describe the circumstances in which an action happens, and in general they answer the questions How? When? Where? How much? Or in what way? An adverb can be complemented with other words, which help clarify the circumstance or frequency with which it is described, creating a phrase or adverbial group, in which the nucleus always prevails adverb. These constructions in which the nucleus is an adverb that explains place, time or circumstance of an action is also known as circumstantial complement.
Prepositional Complements
Prepositions are used as a complement to the adverb, to connect them with another adverb or to introduce an adverbial phrase:
The dog ran far from the farm. (Far is the nucleus adverb. The farm is a nominal construction that acts as an adverb and the preposition "de" serves as a connective)
Came like lightning. ("Como de rayo" is an adverbial construction so that it is equivalent to quickly or quickly)
I was getting up early occasionally. ("From time to time" is an adverbial construction that is introduced with the preposition "of")
Adjectival complements
An adverb can also be modified by an adjective, without the expression being altered in its adverbial function. It can also be modified by an adverbial phrase:
This morning we have a beautiful today. (The adverb of time today is complemented by the adjective handsome)
It rained yesterday pretty strong. (The quantifier Quite, complements the meaning of the adverb so strong)
Adverbial complements
Adverbs can also be modified by another adverb or by an adverbial construction. In this case the nucleus adverb predominates:
I came early daily all month. (to the adverb daily, is complemented by the adverbial construction the whole month, both are adverbs of time, the first expresses the frequency and the second delimits the period).
The ball bounced beyond the courtyard. (In this construction the adverbial construction of place beyond modifies the adverbial construction of place from the playgroung)
His explanation was very rational. (the adverb very tells us to what degree the adverb is modified rational)
