Indirect Complement Example
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
The indirect object is the part of the sentence that complements the predicate indicating what or about whom the action of the verb finally falls.
The subject of the sentence is an animal, person or thing that is spoken of and the predicate expresses the state or action that the subject performs; this action or state is expressed by the verb, which is the core of the predicate. In addition to the kernel, the predicate can contain other expressions that complete and clarify the meaning of the sentence. The indirect object serves to indicate on what or on whom the action carried out by the subject is ultimately directed or falls.
For example, in the following sentence:
- My neighbor Elvira sews clothes for her children.
The subject: My neighbor Elvira, performs an action: sews. The action is carried out on an object: clothing. This is the direct object. The action that My neighbor Elvira performs to sew clothes is finally for someone who is not the subject (Elvira), that is, it ends up in someone else: “for her children”. This is the indirect object.
In this other sentence:
- The coach teaches basketball to the boys.
The subject is "the coach", the action he performs is "teaches", the direct complement is "basketball" and the indirect object, to whom the action is directed, is "the children".
How to identify the indirect object?
To identify the indirect object, this part of the predicate together with the action of the verb, you must answer the questions:
- To what?
- To who? or
- For whom?
My neighbor Elvira sews clothes for her children: Who does Elvira sew clothes for? For her children.
Coach teaches boys basketball: Who does coach teach basketball? To the kids.
Another way to identify the indirect object is that they commonly begin with a preposition (a, de, para). We can also do it is that we can replace it with pronouns him, them:
- My neighbor Elvira sews clothes in order to her children - My neighbor Elvira them she sews clothes.
- Coach teaches basketball to children - the coach them teaches basketball.
- Estela bathes the children from Marta - Estela you bathe the children.
- Related: Direct complement.
