Reprimand that has the mission of providing a teaching
The sermon is a term in common use in our language and it is used to designate that long and repeated reprimand that normally one person gives to another because he did not comply with an activity or a commitment that he had made or that it was a obligation. A father who discovers that his son did not attend classes at the school because he ran away, after finding out about it, he will give a sermon to the child so that he does not repeat that action that does not correspond and also as a education.
Because in some way the sermon has the mission of educating someone on some issue or of making him understand that something he did was not right and that he should avoid it.
Preach God's teaching in religion
On the other hand, in the religious sphere, the concept has a recurring use, associated with the reference just mentioned of being a teaching, since in religion the sermon is a speech that is raised by a priest at a mass or that emerges from some prayer of the gospel and that it has the mission of preaching some teaching about God, or about how a good faithful should behave in the lifetime.
In almost all religions we find sermons that have the sole mission of promoting some conduct in the believer and as a counterpart to counteract some other that is totally contrary to what the religious doctrine in question proclaims.
Respect and commitment to the religious sermon on the part of the faithful
Meanwhile, the faithful should pay special attention and I respect to the priest when he is preaching the sermon. That is to say, it is a very important moment when it comes to religion and then as such it is that the faithful must respect it, listen to it carefully and of course then act in accordance with what he himself proposes. For example, if you are talking about generosity and modesty, the importance of having both qualities, the faithful must adopt them and act in accordance with them.
In the Christian religion there is a very long tradition of sermons, even Jesus, during his time on earth knew how to interpret some memorable ones, such as the one that today stands as the prayer par excellence of the CatholicismSuch is the case of the Lord's Prayer.
