The concept that concerns us has several uses in our language and that occur in different contexts.
One word, multiple uses
In its most general and extensive use, the substrate would be the substance of things, the being of them.
In geology ...
On the other hand, and in the field of geology, the soil layer that is below the layer that would be the surface layer is called a substrate. It is also often referred to as subsoil.
Normally it can be composed of clay or sand that have undergone a partial action by climatic agents such as air, the wind, the Water and the sun, among others.
