Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
The sentences figuratively are those sentences in which we use a sense that goes beyond the literal and therefore must be inferred or interpreted from different linguistic and contextual elements.
The figurative sense, then, is the one who is contrary to the literal sense. The literal meaning is the one that words have due to their lexical meaning; it is a denotative sense: it is what the words generally refer to; the realities, concepts or ideas that they name by convention. For example, the literal meaning of airplane It is an air vehicle, which has wings, an engine and different mechanisms for its operation.
The figurative sense is generated from the literal sense. Words, in addition to their lexical meaning, they acquire another meaning given by the speaker. It could be said that it is used to not say something directly or as a stylistic or playful way of expressing oneself. For example, in the sentence "Your plane is leaving," the word airplane In this context, it no longer only refers to the aerial vehicle; the complete sentence means that a person is missing something or is distracted. Let's look at some other explained examples of sentences figuratively:
- “You smell like lion”. This sentence figuratively means that a person smells bad.
- “You are in limbo”. This sentence in a figurative sense is used to express that a person is not paying attention, is scattered or distracted.
- “You are going to stay to dress saints”. This sentence in a figurative sense, common in popular speech, is used to express that a person who does not marry in time later will not be able to marry. We can commonly find sentences in a figurative sense in different manifestations of everyday or colloquial speech, such as sayings, set phrases or sayings. It is also common to find the figurative sense in literature, since many times the authors seek to make a stylistic and artistic use of the language.
