Example of Copulative Sentences
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
Copulative sentences, also called attributive sentences, are the sentences that have a copulative verb and an attribute. These types of predicates that contain a copulative verb and an attribute are called noun predicates.
The copulative verbs have the function of linking the subject with a attribute. Hence its name copulative, since its main function is the union of two elements. By themselves these types of verbs do not have a complete meaning; the attribute complements the idea of what is expressed by the copulative verb.
The copulative verbs in Spanish are the following:
- To be
- To be
- Seem
The attribute linked to the subject of the sentence is a word or a phrase that adds a quality or a state to the subject. The attribute can be composed of an adjective (“She is high"), A noun (" She is a hardworking person”), An adverb (“ That is very well"), A pronoun (" We are the best U.S”), An infinitive verb (“ Amar es forgive") Or a subordinate clause (" The important thing is may we be happy”).
The attribute of a copulative sentence can always be replaced by the pronoun it. In this way we can identify it more easily.
Let's explain:
- Life it is pink color.
In this copulative sentence the copulative verb to be joins the attribute pink color with the subject Life.
- This food It seems delicious.
In this copulative sentence the copulative verb seem unite the subject This food with the attribute delicious.
- The boy this lost.
The copulative verb to be bind attribute lost with subject of the sentence: The boy.
As mentioned, the attributes of copulative sentences can be substituted for the pronoun it. Let's take the attributes of the sentences above as an example:
- Life is pink color. (Life it it is).
Attribute pink color can be substituted for the pronoun it.
- This food seems delicious. (This food it It seems).
Attribute delicious can be substituted for the pronoun it.
- The boy is lost. (The boy it this).
Attribute lost can be substituted for the pronoun it.
