The urine is a clear yellow fluid, translucent, produced by the kidneys product of the filtration of the blood. It has a reference in Latin urīna.
Urine regulates various functions of the body
The kidneys perform a large number of vital functions in the body, the vast majority of them are achieved thanks to the process of production, filtration and concentration of urine.
Urine production is an important regulatory mechanism of the environment internal body, since through it it is possible to regulate the concentration of various substances in the blood, and indirectly in other body fluids, in order for it to function in a adequate.
The regulation of these fluids contributes to maintenance of parameters such as blood pressure, the degree of acidity of the blood (known as pH) and the concentration of various mineral substances.
Production and disposal
Urine is produced at the level of the kidneys, specifically in the nephrons that are their
Unit functional. This phenomenon occurs at the microscopic level, by diffusion of liquids through the wall of the capillaries.Initially the blood is filtered to obtain the plasma, this passes into a series of small tubes where substances such as minerals that must be kept in the blood (such as calcium) and those that are in excess in the blood are secreted (for example sodium).
At the end of the tubules it reaches small tubes that join to form the ureters, which are the structure that allows urine to pass from the kidneys to the bladder. Here it is kept stored until it can be released from the body when urinating, for which it must pass through a second tube called the urethra.
This process allows the removal of various substances
The function of this process of filtering plasma from the blood is to eliminate various substances such as:
- Waste products from metabolism like creatinine.
- Products ingested with food as is the case with salt, calcium.
- Excess fluids.
- Drugs and toxins.
Loss of ability to produce urine puts health at risk
When there is an alteration in the functioning of the kidneys and they cannot produce urine normally or in the worst case they do not produce it at all (anuria) we speak of a cooked state such as renal failure, which is incompatible with lifetime.
Those who suffer from this condition need to undergo dialysis treatment or a kidney transplant in order to filter the blood.
