The term 'mental' is used to refer to everything that is related to the human mind, its functions, its capacities and its alterations. This word is also used as a qualifier for certain types of personalities in the which the use of reason and rationality is an outstanding characteristic over the the rest.
Unlike other parts of the body, the mind is not an organ per se, but a phenomenon that takes place in the brain and involves the understanding, reason, knowledge and language among many other capacities that differentiate the human being from the animal kingdom and vegetable. The possibility of becoming aware of yourself, others and everything that surrounds you is a capacity that arises from the mind. The mind is also what allows the human being to develop his will, memory and imagination, three elements that are unique and different from individual to individual. Despite being directly linked to the ability to think and reason, the mind is also the space where other sensations related more to
emotions, feeling: the ability to feel love, hate, joy, fear and desire. The study of functioning of the mind allows us to know how the brain reacts to certain stimuli, but it is much more difficult to be able to explain from a concrete point of view the behaviors, conducts and attitudes of people since they cannot be reduced to the equationstimulus-answer.
In this sense, the mind can present or develop tendencies to certain alterations over time. These alterations can be genetic and hereditary or acquired through the environment in which one is inserted. It is understood as a mental alteration to all that behavior, conduct or capacity that does not follow the parameters established as normal and that are the result of the presence of somatic or psychological complications.
