Using the Z: its spelling rules (with examples)

Use of Z

The letter Z is a consonant y is the last letter of the alphabet. In Spanish there are few words that contain this letter. For instance: zgold, zapathy, lunchzar.

With a few exceptions, Z is not used in front of the letters E or I. In these cases it is replaced by the letter C. For instance: pez/ fish goz/ times, luz/luces.

In many places the Z is pronounced like S, but in certain areas of Spain these letters are pronounced differently. The fact that these letters have a similar or equal pronunciation makes it confusing to know when each one is used.

1. They are written with Z followed by C the irregular verbs that end in -acer, -ecer, -ocer and -ucir when they are conjugated in the first person singular (I) of the present indicative or in any of the people of the present subjunctive. There are some exceptions to this rule: the verbs satisfy, cook, do, and those derived from the last two verbs.
