Importance of the Psychology -or Theory- of Rumor
Miscellanea / / August 08, 2023
A rumor is nothing more than an alleged truth that spreads without control. The content of this information is sensitive and dangerous, since it is highly probable that this type of message is accepted as true when in reality its veracity is non-existent. From the psychology This social phenomenon has been studied and, in fact, there is a rumor theory.
The central thesis of the theory
For a rumor to have this consideration some requirements must be met. In the first place, the supposedly true information must be related to some relevant aspect, that is, something that has a certain social interest (in this sense, the relevant dimension of an issue depends on the values and beliefs that predominate in the society).
Second, the information that is disseminated is limited and is not accompanied by much detail or evidence. (As a general guideline some data is disseminated, but these are enough to activate the imagination of the the rest).
Finally, as it is ambiguous information, the people receivers begin to build their own interpretation or version of the facts. When these circumstances are met, it is already possible to speak of a rumor.
Why is this ambiguous and unsubstantiated information so attractive?
Psychologists who have analyzed "rumours" say that these messages are accepted for two main reasons. On the one hand, because they generate curiosity and intrigue. On the other hand, because they serve to corroborate prejudices or fears.
Gaps in historical research fuel all sorts of rumors
About some historical episodes there is little evidence and many unknowns. From this peculiarity all kinds of speculations and rumors are activated. Thus, we do not know the birthplace of Christopher Columbus and this circumstance has led to different versions about his place of origin. Nor do we know the secrets of the Freemasons and there are very varied stories about them.
The mortal remains of Hitler, the tomb of Alexander the Great or the existence of Atlantis are enigmas of the history that have unleashed a wide diffusion of interpretations.
In everyday life there is abundant false information that is accepted as true.
The difference between what is a rumor and what is directly a lie is very small.
We don't really know how inaccurate or false information ends up being accepted as true, but the indisputable fact is that on a daily basis we handle erroneous beliefs (it is false that prolonged proximity to a screen causes blindness, it is not It is true that swallowing gum can cause a stomach ulcer and it is false that ostriches hide their heads when they have fear).
