The Ritual Of Protest In Urban Marches
Culture And Society / / July 04, 2021
“Far from the topical image of a completely un-ritualistic and secularized modernity, the anthropology of the so-called “Complex societies”, has not stopped documenting the importance of the ritual dimension in the constitution of the social life of our days.
As far as the marches are concerned, there are several groups that decide to make a single voice to be heard and demonstrate what they are and what they believe without import the other groups, that is, society is divided by different circumstances such as social strata and different ideologies. Perhaps it is due to the desire to belong to something or to some group with which they identify.
And the gears are not only about rolling up and interrupting traffic, it is rather as the book says a putting in scene in which prior preparation is required in every way for the message to reach the end selected.
A march includes many means of expression and communication, that is, they each have a specific way of marching, a route that continue, a place where they should go, the place is important since there are places that are already specific meeting points such as the Plinth. Each march has different slogans that characterize them and different objects such as banners or in some cases costumes or dolls symbolizing certain leaders. Many people, thanks to the communication media in general, television, think that these meetings are based on a group of rabble that only cause problems in the city. But the people who are involved in these think otherwise, they are people who seek a definition and legitimacy, for them it is a form of expression, they make their bodies a text to define and decipher, this is why they are not only carried out by a group of people and there is not only one type of them, there is the march, the parade, the rally and the pilgrimage, each of these are different. And thanks to the multiplicity of groups, the reasons are many and more and more people are gathering. For example, every year at the end of June the Gay community march takes place, which does not seek to make a fuss and stop traffic, that is not to say, they seek to end that mark that society puts on them, they seek freedom and as I mentioned before they meet at a point that for them is symbolic, such as the monument to Juárez, they choose this place because of the saying "Respect for the rights of others is peace", this means that these means of demonstrating have a reason and an elaboration previously thought. And in this specific case, they not only seek to say that there must be freedom and be present, no, it is also among the same group or community since this march is carried out I end up on sidewalks and streets since those who walk in the street say that they have "come out of the closet", so it is interesting to study what these urban marches have in the background. Since each one has specific purposes, and the members, the majority are aware of what they want to achieve.
