Located in the Caribbean Sea, Haiti is one of the poorest countries in America and the world, a situation generated by centuries of abuse and dominance over the population native and slave brought from Africa, as well as by disastrous, authoritarian and corrupt governments. Haiti has a predominantly black population and a 5 percent mulatto and white population. Today, its number of inhabitants exceeds nine million, which is a fairly high number for the scarce and poor. territory that occupies the country. The capital city of Haiti is Port-au-Prince, and the country is located in the western half of the island of Hispaniola, shared with the Dominican Republic.
The history of Haiti is very similar to that of all American countries: from the encounter between the two worlds (American and European), the island attended centuries of French abuse that settled in the place and that massacred the native population until it almost made it disappear and thus needed to import slaves from Africa. Haiti was however the first
nation American in becoming independent from the European yoke, establishing in 1804 the first republic ruled by blacks in the world.Today, one of the main and most pressing problems in Haiti is the poverty extreme in which its population lives. One of the elements that contributes to this is the absolute lack of natural resources that were slowly disappearing due to the abusive exploitation of both Europeans and the Haitian population itself. It is estimated that today there is only two percent of the total vegetation that existed on the island at the beginning of the 20th century and obviously the exploitation of such resources it was never beneficial to the same population. In addition, the Haitian population suffers from a major crisis of illiteracy, misery, unsafety, lack of resources for subsistence and government corruption.
