The word plenary comes from the Latin plenarius and means full. A plenary session is understood to be a form of meeting in which all possible members that make up a group attend or, failing that, a large majority.

Regarding its historical origin, it must be placed in the context of ancient Rome, where the Roman Law and the set of institutions that required a system to organize the meetings.

The use of the term plenary today

In most institutions, both public and private, a protocol administrative that regulates and formalizes the meetings to give them an official character. Thus, in the field business the board of directors of a company You can call a plenary session which will be attended by the representatives of said entity.

In the sphere politics the sessions of the different bodies of representation they are known as plenary sessions. In this way, there are ordinary, extraordinary or solemn plenary sessions. The concept of plenary is applicable, therefore, to a council, to a congress or chamber of representation or to any body of popular representation.

In any case, the term has an eminently formal character and the use of terms such as plenary agreement, session plenary or plenary council (the latter would be part of the ecclesiastical terminology).

In the field of law

Trials can be divided into summary or plenary. The former are those in which the judgments are not final and, therefore, some type of appeal or recourse is feasible. The plenary trials are those processes by which a court has full powers and, consequently, there is no possibility of making another trial on the same matter. The plenary trial is considered final since it does not allow any type of appeal in this regard.

The plenary indulgence

An indulgence is a pardon, that is, a pardon. In the tradition Catholic indulgences are granted to forgive certain faults or sins. However, there is a particular type of indulgence, the plenary indulgence, which consists of the forgiveness of all sins related to a sin. For a plenary indulgence to occur, certain conditions must be met, such as confession, communion, prayer and even some complementary actions, such as the realization of spiritual exercises or a pilgrimage to a place holy.
